Encrypt Backup Files with Botzam Backup
Botzam, a new company from the original founders of Actual Software, has released Botzam Backup, which backs up data and applications onto expansion cards. It supports scheduling, compression, and encryption and will work with Memory Sticks, SD cards, and Compact Flash cards. It is available now for $15.
Data can be encrypted and password protected so that it will not be readable by anyone else in case the memory card is lost or stolen.
It isn't necessary to backup or restore the entire device. The app includes an advanced mode which allows selective file backup or restoration.
Botzam was founded earlier this year by Mark Lussier and Lorraine Wheeler, who were the founders of Actual Software, the makers of MultiMail. Actual Software was purchased by Palm in May, 2000.

There is also a man named Marco Botzam in Albanian history.
So why the name? Who knows!
Archiving deleted files?
Their webpage doesn't reveal much about my questions.
RE: Archiving deleted files?
(I have only experimented with encryption on but not compression because I have a large memory card. Encryption is my only interest because I can use HandEra's built-in backup which is a lot faster than Botzam.)
It does incremental backups, meaning that after the first backup, it only saves the files that have changed (a nice time saver). I don't know how that works with compression turned on.
I'm not sure how CardSync works, but I don't think this program saves deleted files. At the end of each backup, it removes "orphan files" which I assume is the process of getting rid of files deleted in ram. The reason I'm not sure is that in advanced mode where it displays a list of all files, it doesn't sort them alphabetically! So you have to wade through every file to find what you are looking for or to see if a file still exists.
It had a major problem with my security software (Gridlock). Because Gridlock takes over when you turn on the machine, the scheduled backup feature won't work. Furthermore, it then caused alarms to fail until I turned on the machine again to get things back to normal. (I found this last point out by missing my wake up alarm this morning after setting Botzam to backup in the middle of the night last night; it failed to do so because of the Gridlock conflict.) But if I feel like I need encrypted backups, I probably am the kind of person who wants some startup security as well, so turning off Gridlock is not a good option.
I'm having some inconsistent problems with the "remember password" feature. It tells me the password is incorrect after I have asked it to remember it. So I have to go in a clear the password and reenter it. It takes the original password just fine once I enter it again.
Of course, YMMV.
I think a little more time with some beta testers would have helped this release.
Have you ever tried to save an encrypted *.pst file?
RE: Have you ever tried to save an encrypted *.pst file?
"This will be the same. I can see people running to my desk now to say, "please help me get my Palm data back!" I'll ask what the password is, they'll say " I dunno." I'll say too bad, so sad."
I guess our response will be the same to users and admins alike when they come running looking for their server data after they've lost their palm which had network passwords stored in it and backed up. You can put all the lock down tools you like on your palm, but if it's not encrypted, then it's sitting their on your backup card for the plucking. This tool helps address that.
The only thing is, it's pretty slow, even without encryption turned on. But then I may be conditioned to HandEra's in-the-blink-of-an-eye Backup/Restore.
