Quickies: Palm Suit, 512 MB SD Cards, Kingdom, MEG, Deep Sleep
A federal court has ruled that Palm Inc. didn't infringe on a patent held by E-Pass Technologies. E-Pass filed suit in February 2000 alleging Palm infringed a 1994 patent and arguing that the company's handhelds were electronic, multifunction cards. The court decided that Palm did not infringe literally or under the broader Doctrine of Equivalents and granted its request for summary judgment. -PR

RE: Still Palm has the Xerox lawsuit
Once complete, a course in consequences would be helpful...
It's just a small point... But if Palm loses the lawsuit, they will either have to pay Xerox for graffiti or withdraw it. I see little chance of Palm paying.
That means withdrawing it. That means licensee's won't be able to use Graffiti either, including Sony.
Also, don't forget if Palmsource goes under, SOny loses its OS..
hmmm yes...
RE: Still Palm has the Xerox lawsuit
Anyway the Xerox suit will affect the OS! So it will also affect Sony. Dumb ass

A U.S. district court judge has dismissed a patent infringement suit brought against Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM) that had claimed Palm’s Graffiti handwriting recognition software infringed a Xerox patent.
RE: Still Palm has the Xerox lawsuit
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
Palm, Inc. (Nasdaq: PALM) today announced that the U.S. District Court in Rochester, N.Y., rejected a recent motion made by Xerox Corporation related to a claim of patent infringement. The court refused to halt the sale of Palm
Powered(TM) handhelds in the United States and, further, rejected Xerox' effort to set a trial date to determine damages Xerox claims it is owed.
Calling the latter motion "premature," the court noted that Palm's appeal of the decision is still pending. The court actions occurred late Friday, Feb. 22.

Quick 512 mb SD card question
With the OS 4.1 models (and upgraded m500s and 505s) they can access up to a 256mb card.
Now, does anyone know if OS 4.1 automatically can handle these new larger cards? If not, does anyone know if this will be corrected in OS 5?
What is the largest size that SD can handle? Reports I've read are conflicting-many say 512 mb, some say up to 1/2 gigs.
I have a Panasonic digicam that uses SD and I am looking to buy a very large memory card, so this is an important issue currently.
RE: Quick 512 mb SD card question
The have there own controller.
When the 505 came out, it was mentioned on the Palm site that it could be expanded with a 64 Mb SD-card. I think because that was the largest availlable that time. In my uneducated opinion the Palm will take any size SD-card availlable. There has been a problem with the 128 Mb card from Sandisk, which was a defect of that card itself.
RE: Quick 512 mb SD card question
Question - would the 512 have the same problem - I would suspect so.
Lets see -:)
RE: Quick 512 mb SD card question
Uhh, 512mb IS 1/2gig. Those reports aren't conflicting, they are saying exactly the same thing.

RE: Quick 512 mb SD card question
If your m515 will not format your SD card (128mb or whatever), your individual m515 has a problem and you should contact Palm Support. They will ask you to perform A: Soft reset. B: Hard reset. C: Install FatFS.prc and try to reformat the card.
The soft reset is harmless and probably won't fix it. The hard reset will erase all data on your Palm, and you will need to restore the Palm 3rd party software and your personal data. This has a 40% chance of fixing the problem if you have not done it already. If the card reformat still does not work, they may have you download and install FatFS.prc, which was designed for the m500 and m505, but won't hurt your m515 even if not needed. If none of the above work, they may recommend that you send your device in for replacement. If you cannot be without your Palm, they can send you an "Advance Exchange" for $25. This means you get the replacement first, then ship your defective handheld back in the envelope packaged with the replacement unit.
BACKING UP YOUR CARD
Note: The following assumes your are familiar with copying files in Microsoft Windows Explorer.
Since you have a card reader now, you can backup the card to your pc because Palm will have you try a couple things before they replace the device. To backup the card on a Windows device, simply create a folder called "SD128Backup" or something recognizable to copy the card files into, using Windows Explorer (NOT Internet Explorer). After this folder is created, find your card (after inserting it in the card reader of course) which should appear as a removable drive in the left pane, and single click on that drive to select it and display it's contents in the right pane. Click on any file in the right pane, then hold down "Ctrl" and press the "A" key. This will select all the files on your SD card. Now, move the mouse pointer to the highlighted files in the right pane, then hold down the left mouse button and drag the files to the "SD128Backup" folder you created earlier.
When done, you will have a complete backup of your SD card, so that it can be restored if Palm has you attempt to format the card again.
To restore the card after reformatting, bring up Windows Explorer, left click once on the "SD128Backup" folder, then left click once on any file in the right pane, then hold down "Ctrl" and press the "A" key. After this, move the mouse pointer to the highlighted files in the right pane, then hold down the left mouse button and drag the files to the card.
RE: Quick 512 mb SD card question
I was trying to say , essentially, "...1 or 2 gigs..."
Sorry for the confusion! I just wanted to know that if i put down the big $$ for a big card, that my (unflashed to OS 4.1--not worth the risk) m505 and Panasonic SD cam can both handle the card.

FYI: Problems with 128MB SD card
As someone posted above, there was a batch of non-Palm compatible 128MB SD cards that SanDisk released before March or April 2002. The newer ones that were updated by SanDisk work fine.
I no longer have any problems formatting my 128MB SanDisk SD Card using my Palm m515.
