Rumor: Color T415 in December

According to Brando's Palm news site, Sony will be releasing a color version of the T415 in December. The site does not give any information on the source of this info. It also doesn't say what the screen resolution will be. It does say it will run Palm OS 4.1 and cost HK$2650, which is about US$340.

When asked, a Sony spokesperson gave the company's standard answer to questions about rumors, "No comment."

In order for this to have a 320 by 320 screen, Sony's engineers would have had to overcome some formidable technical challenges to get a hi-res color screen into a smaller handheld than anyone ever has before. If it has a 320 by 320 screen in a slim casing for only $340, it will certainly wipe out sales of Sony's own N610C.

It might have a 160 by 160 color screen, which would ease some of the technical difficulties and it would put less pressure on the N610C.

Of course, it's also possible that this report is mistaken. Many user's first comment on seeing the T415 was to ask for a color version. This rumor may simply be wishful thinking.

Thanks to rldunn for the tip. -Ed

Wouldn't that be just like an m505?

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/24/2001 1:57:35 PM #
Assuming it had a 160x160 screen, it would be really similar to the m505, ableit a little thinner. Maybe they'll have to increase the width a little to add that, assuming this is for real.

Yes! Yes! Sony Fans I know!

It would also have a jog dial, memory-stick "support", and the like. Which would "obviously" make it a much better purchase than the already "beleagured" m505.

Also, why is it called the T415? Isn't that the most obscure name ever? The last T I knew with a number was the Terminator 2, "Ahnold".

"Ahnuld" was a model T-800, if I'm not mistaken and his "hemi-metallic" nemesis in T-2 was a T-1000. I don't think the original was upgradeable, though :)

Here's what I will do, I'll get the paper white T415 and then when the color T415 comes out, sell it while the price is still high! Sweet!

Here's what you'll REALLY do: buy the paper-white, ultra-thin T415, then get pissed off when this rumor turns out to be false.

If at all, look for a T415C sometime mid-2002, at a price of at least $450.

Sony wouldn't release one new model in November, then--at a $40 difference--then a better one a month later, especially after only recently hitting the market with possibly the most dominating trio since Aikman, Smith, and Irvin.

Use some common sense...if you've got any.

Paper White
Ed @ 10/25/2001 1:05:58 AM #
I talked to my contact at Sony about the T415's screen. He described the background as being less green and more gray than the S320's and lighter, too. The phrase "paper white" certainly never came up.

I don't know anything about hardware, but ~$100 more to enhance a near(er)-paper white screen to a color screen doesn't seem that big of a deal? The m505 is tiny and costs about the same more than the m500.

Try second quarter 2002.....

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/24/2001 2:31:50 PM #
It would really be a disaster for everyone who bought any N-series color unit. If sony does that no one will buy from them until they have a longer product cycle.

I also doubt it would be selling for $340. With that design they could command at least 380 and possible 400.

If I were sony I would wait until an official review by WSJ, Cnet, or other credible source comes out before releasing a color unit.

If you buy your handhelds so that you can have the newest-latest, you're always going to be disappointed. If you buy your handheld because it does what you want it to do for a price you can afford, you may get a little envious sometimes, but you'll always be as happy with your own PDA as the day you bought it.

COLOR T415 would be SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!!

Looks like my 505 would end up on EEEEEEBBBBAAAAAAYYYY!

And you'd be LOOOOOOSSSSSSIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNGGGGGG MMMMOOOOOONNNNNNNNEEEEEEEEYYYYYYYY. At $340, if it's true, this unit would drive the price of a NEW m505 to at least $300 or less. Which would drive your used unit down to about $150, realistically. If you want more, hope you find a major sucker!

I don't think I want a color T415...

Moosecat @ 10/24/2001 3:21:46 PM #
... after I saw how Babelfish translated the paragraph from Brando on it:

LOL. Same here. I've been to Hong Kong and you can get prostitute dysentery for alot less than $340.

RE: I don't think I want a color T415...
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/24/2001 3:54:18 PM #
Actually, Bablefish translates it as:

SONY approximately ‰— December, the ›’ guess coming out T series COLOR, æî cClie T415 one žé it is thin the body design and the ’A use coloring fluorescent curtain, šS approximately HK$2650- d'_'b renewal and ›€ use OS 4.1

Which I translate as:
Sometime around December, Sony will be releasing a COLOR T series palm, like the Clie T415. It has a thin body design, has a color flourescent (backlit?) screen, will cost about $340 :), has a rechargable battery, and uses OS 4.1.

go to babel.altavista.com
now, in the text box, cut and paste the description from brando.
now pick japanese to english. this is what I get:

-----------
SONY approximately ‰— December, the ›’ guess coming out T series COLOR, æî cClie T415 one žé it is thin the body design and the ’A use coloring fluorescent curtain, šS approximately HK$2650- d'_'b renewal and ›€ use OS 4.1

Moosecat @ 10/24/2001 4:04:42 PM #
Hmm.. I just had Babelfish translate the whole page, and then I cut and paste that paragraph into the above post.

Even if results vary, a remote threat of prostitute dysentery as a result of using the T415 makes me hesitant to purchase it.

RE: I don't think I want a color T415...
tian100 @ 10/24/2001 4:06:49 PM #
OK, guys, here is a "human translation" from a Chinese living in the States:

SONY will introduce T series COLOR around December. It will have a thin (slim body) design similar to T415, but will have a color screen. The price will be around HK$2650. d'_'b
Update: it uses OS4.1

FWIW

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/24/2001 4:20:03 PM #
The word "renewal" does not mean rechargable battery. There's another word for that.

I think what it really wants to say is "Moreover, it will use OS 4.1"

RE: I don't think I want a color T415...
I.M. Anonymous @ 10/24/2001 4:33:50 PM #
LOL! If Sony comes out with a "prostitute dysentery" model, people will criticize the Palm m505 and Handera 330 for not offering that as a free upgrade!

I think that Brando wants to reach 3 million hits to its site. There is no color T415 this year.

Hah, the reason you got it wrong when you picked english to japanese is because it's chinese :) hence the .hk domain.. means Hong Kong ;) Some people are so ignorant of outside US borders :)

Not the first time i see this type of post ... the other one was with the Acer s10's Comments. I guess some people here can't tell the difference between Chinese and Japanese.

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/24/2001 11:28:36 PM #
Japanese, Hong Kong, Chinese, .hk whatever, you just want to argue. The new Sony Pda doesn't really have anything to do with the price of tea in china, so get on subject.

I think the new Sony will have a high-res monochrome screen, ie black and white, but not green and black.

Ha ha ha, I paid less for my n610, only $339.00,
don't think I will be upgrading soon, unless the device offered more features than just thinner... Though thinner is a rather nice feature,

The greyscale (not mono) T415 won't be out until almost December. If they had a color one coming in December, why not talk about them at the same time? Easy answer, they wouldn't.

If a crapload of people bought the T415 in November and Sony put out a color version in December, 95 percent of them would return it. Huge loss for Sony. They can't sell those T415s as new again.

If Sony could make a unit better than the 610, why charge LESS for it? People would pay $400 - 450 for a color T415. $340? I don't think so.

Even Sony can't jam a high-res screen into .4 inches. Not yet.

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/24/2001 4:05:20 PM #
Well Palm was stupid enough to do just that with their m500 and m505 :)

But, what if the prices for the T415 stays the way it is ($299), but the color version would be $100 - $150 more, then that would make some sense.

RE: In a Pig's Eye
jeremyf @ 10/25/2001 2:44:25 AM #
It makes /very good sense/ to announce the T415 now and the color T415 (if it exists) afterwards...

Announcing T415 mono: reduce competitor (m500, edge) sales as people wait for the T415, since Sony doesn't really have a comparable model..

Announce the T415 color: reduce 610 and 760 sales as people wait for the color...

Also, Sony doesn't really have a long "announce time" in general before popping out a new unit... how long after the announcement did the 760 come out? (Did they even make an official announcement?)

RE: In a Pig's Eye
mikecane @ 10/25/2001 9:34:16 AM #
Generally, it is 3-4 weeks between the time a believable leak occurs and Sony's announcement and/or release of a new CLIE.

But at least the Vx hadn't been out for only four months.
The N610C came out in late June. That's too short a product
cycle. Its unprofiable and pisses off the customers.

Heard of the ipod? a 5 gig mp3 player from apple. It was just unveiled on the 23rd. The iwalk is nothing but wishful thinking. Like "it would be really cool if..." I don't think so. It would be nice but extremely unlikely. (as for the near future.)

And anyway, if the ipod has a 5 gig hard drive and is the same size as a deck of cards, why not have a hard drive for the next generation of PDAs. you could eliminate the need for ram and rom all together but it would be pricey.
